How many of you have heard of Elizabeth Freeman? She was a slave in
Massachesetts when the Declaration of Independence was written.
Determined to gain her freedom, she escaped from slavery and found an
attorney who agreed to help her. They went to court and argued that
slavery was illegal according to the Declaration of Independence. The
State of Massachesetts agreed and abolished slavery there.
